CENTRAL ISLIP, NY - On May 13, police arrested Andrew Ramsaroop, 30, after he reportedly began chatting with a girl through social media, and arranged a time to meet her at a mall.
American Khahani reported:
The Trinidad and Tobago-born Ramsaroop allegedly met the teen on Snapchat. He then made plans to meet her. They met on May 13 at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, news reports said. “At that time, he tried to coax the girl and her friend into his vehicle but was rebuffed,” investigators told the New York Post.
Later on the same day, he met her at a playground in Hauppauge where he raped her, the Post added. He was arrested that evening after the girl informed a school official about the rape and the school notified the police.
Ramsaroop has admitted to raping the 13-year-old girl, according to court documents.
Ramsaroop was charged with second-degree rape, second-degree criminal sexual act, and endangering the welfare of a child. He is currently being held at the Suffolk County Jail on $1.5 million bail.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed, according to detectives.
While this story did receive limited local coverage, the only media outlet that reported Ramasroop's immigration status was American Kahani and the Caribbean newspaper known as The Loop, while The New York Post, for instance, described the confessed child rapist simply as "a Queens man."
