SAN MATEO, CA - On Tuesday, police arrested Alejandro Vanegas Guevara, 27, following a brutal sexual assault of a 62-year-old woman, at a bus stop at the intersection of 9th Avenue and South El Camino Real.
The attack, which occurred on August 5, around 10:40 p.m., left the woman with life-threatening injuries.
Following an appeal to the public for information and any security camera images, detectives sifted through hours of surveillance video footage and hundreds of crime tips. The investigation led to to a taqueria near downtown San Mateo that had clear video the suspect within minutes of the crime, police said.
Guevara has been charged with forcible rape, assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping. He is currently being held at the San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City.
The victim, who is said to be “currently fighting for her life at a local trauma center,” is the sole provider for her two young sons and her 90-year-old mother, according to police.
The San Mateo Police Officers' Association has set up a GoFundMe account to help the victim and her family with expenses.
