ERIE, PA - On August 18, 2022, police arrested Luis Angel Salome-Gonzalez, 30, after he reportedly beat an elderly man into a coma near the intersection of East 11th and French streets.
A witness to the attack, James Farley told prosecutors under oath:
He [Salome-Gonzalez] flipped him over and started punching him and punching him and punching him in the face, and it was terrible…It was just a bloody mess.
Farley stopped his vehicle and went to check on Smith, who he said was punched in the face 15 to 20 times by Salome-Gonzalez.
Smith was bleeding profusely from the ears and both of his eye sockets were shattered from the beating.
In a criminal complaint, Erie Police Detective Sgt. Craig Stoker and Detective James Langdon wrote:
Salome-Gonzalez struck the 80-year-old victim with a garbage can in the upper chest and chin area, knocking the man to the ground. Witnesses to the incident reported that after the man was knocked to the ground, Salome-Gonzalez stood over the man and struck him in the face multiple times.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim, Timothy L. Smith, lying unresponsive, covered with blood.
He was taken to UPMC Hamot, where he lay in a coma for nearly a month..
On September 13, Smith succumbed to his injuries.
Salome-Gonzalez was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering, simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime and disorderly conduct. He is currently being held at the Erie County Prison (in Pod F) without bond.
While the beating received scant coverage locally, not one other media outlet has reported on the fact that Salome-Gonzalez is in the country illegally, and has a history of run-ins with the police.
