DURHAM, NC - On Thursday, police apprehended Byron Maudis Cinto-Lopez, 33, after he reportedly ran a stop sign and slammed his pickup truck into a police cruiser being driven by Durham Police Officer B.K. Gardner.
The crash occurred on Guess Road shortly before 11 p.m.
Cinto-Lopez quickly jumped from his truck and fled the scene on foot.
Cinto-Lopez was charged with DWI, felony hit-and-run, aggravated felony serious injury by vehicle, driving while license revoked for DWI and failure to yield right of way. He is currently being held at the Durham County Jail on an ICE detainer.
Officer Gardner was injured and is currently recovering in a local hospital.
*While the crash has been covered locally, not one media outlet has reported that Cinto-Lopez is in the country illegally, though the ICE Hold is visible in the Durham County Jail’s online booking log.
In 2003, the Durham City Council approved the “RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS REGARDLESS OF IMMIGRATION STATUS,” which officially implemented a ‘sanctuary’ policy for illegal aliens arrested in the city.
