PORTLAND, ME – On July 5, police stopped the vehicle being driven by Abdikareem Hassan, after officers witnessed him drive onto the curb at the intersection of Franklin Street and Cumberland Avenue. It was discovered during the traffic stop that the vehicle was stolen.
The vehicle also matched the description of one that had been used in a recent drive-by shooting at the Portland Police Department headquarters, earlier in the day. Several shots were fired into the garage where a police officer was located, though the officer was not wounded in the attack a police car was hit by the gunfire.
Hassan was placed under arrest and taken to police headquarters for questioning. While there, he reportedly attacked a Portland police officer as well as an FBI agent.
The Somali national has been charged with DUI, DUI/habitual offender, unauthorized use of property, assault on a police officer, refusal to submit to arrest or detention and criminal mischief, assault on a federal officer, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and illegal possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
At this time, police have not released a motive for the shooting, but have not ruled out terrorism.
