GASTONIA, NC – The man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death about a month after he reportedly took a bullet for her was back in court Friday.
Eduardo Jorges Rojas, 40, appeared before Superior Court Judge Robert Sumner to complete paperwork for his mental evaluation before his case can go forward.
Rojas did not say a word and kept his head down throughout the hearing. He will be sent to Central Regional Hospital, a state psychiatric hospital in Butner, for his evaluation
That hospital, about three hours away from Gaston County Jail, provides court-ordered mental health evaluations for the entire state, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services website.
The hospital is also where people found not guilty by reason of insanity or incapable to proceed in their trials are committed.
Rojas faces a first-degree murder charge after Amoritta “Starr” Costner, a 38-year-old mother of two, was found dead in a bathtub at the couple’s home at 1213 W. 10th Ave. in May.
She was stabbed more than 30 times. Rojas’ mother found the body and called 911.
