Mexican National Caught Smuggling Meth In North Carolina

The Charlotte Observer

A man who shipped methamphetamine from California to Charlotte was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison Tuesday.

Alberto Diaz-Fernandez, 55, pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

In Februry, federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents in Charlotte received information that a shipping pallet carrying a Nissan V-6 engine also contained methamphetamine, according to court records. The pallet was headed from Santa Ana, Calif., to a Charlotte area automotive shop.

Law enforcement seized about five kilograms of methamphetamine that was hidden in the pallet.

The day the shipment was scheduled for delivery, law enforcement approached Diaz-Fernandez as he waited in front of the shop. Diaz-Fernandez said he was expecting an engine he’d shipped from California. He later admitted to shipping the drug “for dangerous people in Mexico,” according to court records.
