EDINBURG, TX – Authorities now believe a 12-year-old Edinburg girl who went missing Monday morning is in Mexico, Assistant Police Chief Oscar Treviño said.
Tuesday just after 4 p.m., police said they made contact with the man they believe the girl, now identified as Sabrina Isabella Luna, ran off with early Monday.
Treviño said officers responded to a residence on Washington Street in Edinburg in reference to a runaway Monday just before 5 a.m.
Luna’s father told police he last saw his daughter at about 2:15 a.m., and she left home without his consent, police said.
“Contact has been made with the suspect by telephone, but he is refusing to return the child to her family — saying they are both in Mexico at this time,” Treviño said.
The suspect was identified as Jose Morales, a Mexican national who is between 18 and 20 years old, police said.
The runaway incident is now considered a kidnapping investigation and officials are asking for assistance from the public.
