ALAMANCE COUNTY, NC – A Burlington man was arrested on multiple charges after his car allegedly struck someone on a moped Wednesday night and continued driving.

Juan Manuel Aguilar Sosa, 21, of Overbrook Drive, was later arrested and charged with felony hit and run with serious injury/death, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license revoked.

He was held under a $3,000 bond.

According to the Burlington Police Department, officers, firefighters and Emergency Medical Services workers responded to a motor vehicle crash at 8:47 p.m. on Maple Avenue at Anthony Road.

Deon Davis Corbett, 33, of Graham, was treated at the scene by EMS before being flown by helicopter to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Lt. Brian Long, of the Burlington Police Department, said that officers were informed late Wednesday night that Corbett was in the hospital’s intensive care unit, though his condition was unavailable Thursday.

Police say Corbett was riding a 2012 Jhejiang Jon moped south on Maple Avenue approaching Anthony Road when Sosa, driving a 2003 Ford Explorer north on Maple Avenue, turned left onto Anthony Road, causing Corbett to strike the right passenger rear door of the vehicle.

Sosa failed to stop and fled the scene.

Once Corbett was transported from the scene, a Burlington police officer began driving around parking lots in the area of Anthony Road near Industry Drive, Long said.

About an hour after the collision, the officer located a vehicle with significant damage in the parking lot of Impact Fulfillment, a business at 1601 Anthony Road with other cars in the parking lot belonging to employees.

As the officer was examining the vehicle, he was approached by Sosa, who police say is an employee of the business.

“The driver approached him and admitted to having been the operator of the vehicle,” Long said.

Damage to the Explorer is estimated to be $5,000 and $1,000 for the moped.
