LACEY, NJ (The Asbury Park Press) – A suspected drunken driver with no license put a pedestrian in a hospital early Saturday morning, police say.
Police responded to the crash on Route 9 and Bay Way at 4:51 a.m. There they found a 31-year-old woman had been walking east on Bay Way near Route 9 when a vehicle hit her from behind and did not stop, Lacey police said.
Police say the woman was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where she was treated with serious injuries.
Eleazar Cholula-Garcia, 31, of the Forked River section of town, was arrested near Route 9 and Haines Street after police said he fled the scene of the crash. Cholula-Garcia is currently being held in the Ocean County Jail. Immigration officials placed a detainer on Cholula-Garcia because he is in the country illegally, according to the jail website.
Cholula-Garcia was charged with being an unlicensed driver, driving while impaired (DWI), reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident and operating a motor vehicle while using a cellphone.
Police also charged Cholula-Garcia with third-degree knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, third-degree assault by auto while driving while intoxicated, third-degree endangering an injured victim and fourth-degree causing serious bodily injury while unlicensed.
