TRENTON, NJ (NJ.com) – An Uber driver sexually assaulted a woman in his car outside her home after after picking her up at a popular Mercer County bar and nightclub early Friday, authorities said Tuesday.
Gilberto Segura, 52, of Hamilton, faces multiple charges of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated sexual contact. He is being held at the Mercer County jail.
Segura picked up the woman at Cooper’s Riverview in Trenton early Friday and drove her to her home in Ewing, authorities said. While out front in his car, he sexually assaulted her, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said.
The woman eventually broke away and one of her roommates called police, authorities said.
Detectives from Ewing Police and the MCPO Special Victims Unit were able to identify Segura using the woman’s phone and Uber app. They later arrested him at his home.
More than 3,000 sexual assaults were reported on the company’s 1.3 billion rides. Law enforcement was reportedly involved in 37 percent of the rapes reported on the app.
*Uber continues to claim that it is only an ‘app,’ rather than a transportation company, therefore, they continue to divest themselves of all responsibilities that would go with a cab company (such as in-depth background checks, requiring drivers to obtain CDL licenses, and carrying the amount of insurance that a cab or limousine company would be required under state law).
Ladies, in short…Take a cab!
