BRIGHAM CITY, UT – A Tremonton man is in jail after he was charged with 22 sex offenses in a case where he allegedly impregnated a victim, leading to an abortion, authorities say.

Arcadio Vasquez, 47, was arraigned March 21 in 1st District Court on 22 felonies that, according to charging documents, date back to 2004. A status conference was set for April 25. He is being held in the Box Elder County Jail in lieu of $220,000 bail.

The alleged abuse began when the listed victim was thirteen years old and continued for several years, even when she became pregnant, according to the allegations.

Defendant eventually impregnated (the teen) and attempted to force her to have an abortion,” reads Deputy Box Elder County Attorney Blair Wardle’s probable cause statement. “An abortion was eventually carried out clinically. Defendant forced (the victim) to have sexual intercourse with him at least two times after the abortion.”

Wardle also wrote that Vasquez admitted to the allegations with the first victim.

The case came to light when an 8-year-old reported alleged illicit advances by Vasquez in August of last year, said Tremonton Police Det. Andy Marchant, who arrested Vasquez March 7. “It took the courage of a brave little girl,” he said.

The subsequent investigation lead to the charges stemming from the abuse of the first victim years ago as well as the 8-year-old, Marchant said.

The abortion incident will be reviewed for possible charges. “We’ll see if something (in the state criminal code) applies,“ he said. “He forced her to take medication he thought could abort the baby. There may be some issues there regarding a lack of parental approval.”

Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have placed a hold on Vasquez for purposes of deportation, according to court documents. Marchant said he is believed to have entered the country illegally – a Mexican national with family in Mexico feared by the victim’s family. He said he calls family members on a weekly basis to assure them they are safe.

Vasquez is charged with six counts of rape of a child, which could bring a prison term of 25 years to life for each count.

Additionally, he is charged with three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, eight counts of forcible sodomy and five counts of rape.
