Police: Liberian ‘Refugee’ Murdered Rhode Island Man

PROVIDENCE, RI (WJAR) – Providence police on Monday made an arrest in a murder investigation from December 26.

Authorities arrested Pofinima Mabuo Gweama Jr., 29, of Pawtucket, in connection to the murder of David Long.

Long was discovered shot inside a vehicle on Fountain Street the day after Christmas.

Police believe Long was shot during a robbery.

During the initial investigation, police told NBC 10 News that they believed the victim and shooter knew each other.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

WPRI also reported:

Long, 31, was the passenger in a car traveling along Fountain Street when he was shot around 4 a.m., according to police. He later died at the hospital.

“Definitely targeted, without question,” Col. Hugh Clements said. “The center of the investigation is focused on drug dealing.”

A vigil of candles and flowers was placed in the same spot where Long was when he was shot and killed.

Long’s father tells Eyewitness News he leaves behind a 10-year-old daughter. He said his son was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Sarah Paine, Long’s sister, lives in Florida but is heading back to Rhode Island for her brother’s funeral.

“My brother will not be remembered as Providence’s 11th homicide of the year,” Pane said in a statement. “He was an amazing person. A sweet and genuine soul. That same soul shines through his daughter, she got that from him.”

*Of course, the media reports on this murder left-out the fact that the accused killer is not a citizen.
