JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC (The Johnston County Report) – A Selma resident was seriously injured after a van ran over her and her bicycle. Police said 25 year-old Keona Phelps of Selma was riding her bike on Preston Street around 10:30am Sunday when she was struck by a Chevy Astro van, dragging her and the bike about 79 feet.
Police said the driver, Jorge Alverto Diaz, 35, of Oak Street, Selma had a strong odor of alcohol. Diaz reportedly admitted to drinking 3 beers before the crash.
After the accident, the victim said Diaz and a female passenger got out of the van, moved the bicycle, then picked her up carried her a block away from the crash site and placed her on a curb. Phelps reportedly told officers Diaz offered her money not to call police. However an eyewitness had already alerted authorities.
Phelps was treated at the hospital for serious injuries.
Selma Police said Diaz refused to submit to a breathalyzer exam. Police obtained a search warrant to obtain a blood sample.
Diaz was charged with driving while impaired and felony causing serious injury with a motor vehicle. He was confined in the Johnston County Jail under a $50,000 bond pending a September 28th court appearance.
