BOLIVIA, NC (Star News) – A Smithfield man was arrested in Brunswick County on Wednesday and charged in the sexual assault of two pre-teen girls.
Melecio Rubio Villagran, 23, is being held in the Brunswick County jail on charges of indecent liberties with a child and sexual battery.
According to the warrants, the girls, ages 11 and 12, were molested in June.
Bail for Villagran is set at $40,000.
In 2013, Villagran was a promising soccer player and was headed to Mexico City to try out for a slot with a top professional soccer team, according to a profile on him in the Raleigh News and Observer at the time. It’s not clear if Villagran made the team.
